  • 枫下拾英 / 小说故事 / about study in toronto -- answer to all the friends
    本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛Hi, there,

Sorry for my late response! As I don't have a good mood these days!

I was accepted by U of T and U of Western Ontario for management program at the same time! I was so happy! When I was just dreaming about becoming a full time student in any of these two famous universities in Canada, I got a very bad news! As I haven't lived in Ontario for 12 months, so I am not qualified for full student loan. That means, I can get the federal loan, but not the provincial loan. The maximum amount for federal loan is only $ 5169 per year! That's not a big amount for me. Tell you the study expense. Annual tuition is $4000 +, 1000 for book, 3000 for housing, food, transportation, others... It will cost about $ 10K a year. As I got some advanced credit, so it will only take me about 2.5 to 3 years to get my bachelor. That's at least $30K for the full study. The worst thing is, if I enrol as a full time student this year, and get the student loan, then I will never get the full loan, as the government requires people should have lived in Ontario for at least one year, before they study full time. So I was so frustrated and upset!

Though I got a quite good job now, and I am taking the Canadian Securities Course ( CSC) which can help me in the future job hunting, I am still eager to be a full time student of u of t! But I have to face the fact. I don't have much saving. I can't borrow money. So I can only wait. Up to now, I am still struggling, whether I should enrol as full time or not.

For the application procedure, which many friends are interested in, my experience is as follow, hope it will be helpful.

As a landed immigrant, if you want to apply for the undergraduate study, you should apply as early as possible, you'd better apply before March 1st. I was late, when I applied, it's already the end of March. It's not good. Because you can't enrol in the Co-op program which is very hot here. Co-op program offers you job when you study, then you can accumulate working experience and get more money.

First you should get an application form fr the u, as you should fill in the form , and send it to the ontario u application centre which is located in another city, Guelph. You can choose three choices about u in your form. Then the center will pass your material to all the u you applied. Then the u will send you their own application form. You should submit TOEFL score, universities transcript, reference letter, and fill in the application form. All the information they quire. Then wait. Oh, yeah, you should pay $ 140 for the Ontario centre and $50 to U of t and $ to u of w.o.. ( for my case).

If your material is not completed, they will inform you what they need. Don't worry. Usually you will get answer fr the beginning of June, if you don't hear fr them until the end of June, you should call them and ask.

    Sounds easy, right?

Wish you could apply smoothly and have a happy life, no matter in China or in Canada.

Actually I am missing China so much now. You can't even imagin.

If you have any question, don't hesitate to ask me. You are always welcome. The only thing is, I can't reply on time, as I still don't have my own computer now. Sorry about that.

    Your friend, lumlum

    • Inquirement
You mention in your application experience that first one should get application form from University you want to apply directly,is it right? If so,how can I choice 3 U ?Do you think I should get the form from Ontario U application center first?Eager for your answer.
      • About the app. form for Ontario application centre, you could get it in any of u. That form is for the u center, not for every single u. Then you sent the form the center, which will take care of your application.
Ater they handle your app, you will recieve every u's apps a few days later. lumlum
    • 谢谢你的故事!It is quite useful for me! Hope we can get well touch with each other. I have a plan for study in U of T with underg .Thanks!
      • You could e-mail me. Then when you are here, we could meet. Welcome to toronto.
    • 你好!lumlumq!听说第二年最多能拿到20,000的贷款,不知道你这样的一落地就读书的能贷到多少??谢谢!
      • no way
20, 000? no way, unless you are married and have kids.
check out osap.gov.cn.ca for detailed information---it may be a little confused---
        if you reside in Ontario.
      • If you haven't lived in ontario for 12 months, you could only apply for the federal loan, the maximum amount is $5169. That's far not enough! So I have to give up full time study plan.
      • Hi, dear jerry, I haven't heard about $20K loan, where do you get this news? SO HUGE amount! BY the way, call me lumlum next time!
        • I'm sorry, lumlumq, but someone told me that 20k is for the one who has children and is out of work, and other "pitiful" reasons.....and,I think you have to get so little as you......
          • check out osap.gov.on.ca, 20k is definitely impossible for one person, if for one couple, yes.
            • sorry, i missed sth here, both have to be students. u cant get much loan if u r having a job, even u have a well-paid job b4 your study period.
          • hmm, just figured it out.

            How Loan Amounts are Determined

OSAP uses a classification system to determine who, along with the student, is principally responsible for his
or her educational-related costs and therefore, who must fill out and sign a section of the student's OSAP
application. For example, married students are expected to have support from his or her partner, and the
partner will be required to supply information about his or her income, etc. All information provided on the
student's OSAP application is then taken into consideration when the amount of loan(s) the student is
            entitled to receive is determined.

            Categories

Married student - student and common-law or same-sex partner must fill out the application.
Student in a common-law or same-sex relationship - student and partner must fill out the application.
Sole-support parent - only the student must fill out the application.
Independent student - only the student must fill out the application.
Dependent student - student and his or her parent(s), step-parent, legal guardian(s), or official
sponsor(s) must fill out the application.

            Married student:
            You are married.

            Student in a common-law or same-sex relationship:
For OSAP purposes, you are living in a common-law or same-sex relationship if (a) you and your
partner have been living together in a conjugal relationship for at least 3 years, or (b) you and your
partner are raising any children of whom you both are the natural or adoptive parents.

            Sole-support parent:
For OSAP purposes, you are considered a sole-support parent if you have any dependent children
living with you full-time during your study period, AND you are single, separated, divorced, or
            widowed.

            Independent student
You are considered an independent student if:
You are separated, divorced, or widowed, AND have no dependent children living with you.
You have been out of high school for at least 5 years as of the start of your study period.
You have not been a full-time student at a high school or postsecondary institution for at least
12 consecutive months on 2 or more occasions.
You are a current or former Crown Ward, or BOTH of your parents are deceased.

            Dependent student
If none of the statements listed in the above categories (married, common-law, sole-support parent,
or independent student) applies to you, you are considered to be a dependent student.

            Special Family Circumstances

OSAP uses standard criteria to assess your financial need and to determine the amount of funding available
to you. In some cases, these criteria may not adequately reflect your particular circumstances. For example,
you may be a survivor of family violence or other severe family problems and may be unable to obtain some
of the information needed to complete your OSAP application. Or, if you expect your parent(s) (if
applicable) income to be lower in 2000, you may request a review based on estimated 2000 income.

You may request a review provided you have not already received the maximum amount of funding. The
deadline date for requesting a review is eight weeks before the end of your study period. Additional
information is also available on the OSAP Web site or you can contact your financial aid office.

            Financial Need

The ministry assesses your financial need and the amount of assistance you are entitled to receive by taking
into consideration allowable educational costs (e.g., tuition fees, other compulsory fees and book and
equipment costs, personal and living expenses), and the financial resources that you (and your family, if
applicable) are considered to be able to contribute.

The following formula is used to determine the amount of loan that may be available to you:
            Allowable educational
            expenses
            -
            expected contribution from
            student or
            student and family
            =
            the amount of financial
            need

Your allowable educational expenses may include:
            tuition fees
            compulsory fees
            books and equipment
            personal living expenses
            child-care costs

The ministry has set maximum limits for tuition fees, compulsory fees, books and supplies, equipment
costs, and personal living expenses; therefore, the amount of your loan(s) may not completely cover
your total educational and living costs.

The expected contribution is based on the ministry's calculation of the amount of money that you should
have available to pay for your education and living costs. The calculation is based on your marital status,
dependent children, work experience, and postsecondary education. Resources which are taken into
consideration can include such things as the family's contribution (from parents' or partner's income), summer
or work-term earnings, academic awards, income from government sources, investment income, and the
earnings during the student's study period.

From your financial need, the ministry determines the amount of loan(s) you are entitled to receive. It is
important to remember that there are maximum amounts of loan(s) available. You cannot receive more
loan(s) than the maximum amounts available; therefore, you may not receive funding to cover all of your
education-related costs. In addition, your loan(s) may be adjusted based on the application deadlines and
            penalities.

            Maximum Amounts of OSAP Assistance

The following table shows the maximum amounts of Canada Student Loan (CSL) and Ontario Student Loan
(OSL) you may be eligible to receive for each week of your study period. Remember, the amounts shown
            are maximums.

            • Hi, there, just wondering, are you working for OSAP now, otherwise where do u get so detailed infor? Thanks a lot! I will read it through very carefully. lum
              • lumlum, see above, osap.gov.on.ca has everything about osap.
    • 还有,你现在收入有保证了吗?你的学费和生活费凑够了吗?别担心,先借着点,等你毕业了都能还上。不是吗?Good Luck!!
      • Thank you for your words, which really move me. You know, I am so weak at the time when the financial aid counsellor told me, if you got the half loan now, you would never get your full amount loan in the future! Now I am fine.
    • my 2 cents
why don't you start from summer session? even as a special
      student for 1st semester.
they have enough courses offered during summer session and
if you take a full-time course load, 6 semesters (2 years)
are enough to get a second degree with transfer credits.
well, the money is a big problem, maybe you can talk to
financial aid officer to see if they can offer any help.
The last thing to remind you is that you are not
allowed to take many commerce courses at U of T
if you are not in commerce program, which requires prerequisites and separate on-line application. You can
heck out commerce program handbook, availabe at Rotman building, for more detailed information.
      • Thank you so much for your kindly remind!!!! But actually u of r has offered me to enter the managerment program directly, as a special student, that means, I needn't take too much pre courses. ^-^ lum
    • Thanks a lot Lumlumg. Pls. Enter.....
I am Joanna and right now I am in China. I've got medical examination notification from Cananda Embassy. My hasband and I plan to go to Toronto at the beginning of next year.
From your article and words I leared that you are such an diligent and smart girl. Could I ask for be one of you friends and could you with me from email? My email address: martpiggy_2000@yahoo.com.

May I ask for your email address?
Thanks so much and take care.
      • hi, there, my address is lumlumq@yahoo.com. Welcome to Toronto. Sorry for late response. Last Friday I went to u of T to take my student card, and got enrolled, finally, as a part time student. Good luck.
    • Are you applying for honors business programme?
      • You need to enrol in POST after you are admitted by U of T.
    • Hi,lumlum! Nice to know you from Rolia. I am also wondering if i should apply master of computer sci. or management undergraduate in U of T or other univ in Toronto. But can u find a good job with mana. underg. degree? Hope we will be good friends in T.
      • I never hear anybody who can't get a job here with his or her bachelor degree in CS or Commerce from Canadian universities:-)
        • EE/CE too
        • 我有听说学CS bachelor 半年没找到工作的
          • I believe it has nothing to do with CS itself.
            • Actually for business, mgmt, or commerce, whatever, these kinds of program, or future jobs related, require a high language and culture background. That's one reason why it's hard to find a suitable job.
              • that's true. probably because most of my friends came here at much younger age comparing to most new immigrants. but if people don't possess enough language and studying skills, they hardly can survive before graduation:-)
                • How young are they? SO they are working in business, or financial, or even management fields now? I am interested in this too. As it's also my chanlleges. Thanks. ^_^
                  • when they first came here? most were in high school and the rest in junior years of college. most for family reunions.
                    • Then, they won't have language barriers. I bet they are more lucky than me. I am trying my best to catch up now. It's not easy, though, I have to tell you in a low voice that, my major is International Trade when I was in China. So shamed! ^_^
                      • ^o^ So such business stuff is just a piece of cake for you! We're here to see your success:-)
      • Sisi, it really depends. Is your bachelor in China computer? Otherwise you can't enrol the computer master here! I am an idiot of computer, so I don't think I can take that course, and business is my interest. That's the reason why I take it.
        • My major is MIS, a combination of computer & management. So it is hard for me to make choice between them. One is my interest like u, but need high language skill & background to find good job, the other is...
A very hot & professional area, everyone transfer to it to expect a better future, and everyone says it is easier for Chinese immigrants to be a programmer other than management.
          • 我听说MIS是CS和management各占一些,念CS研究生恐怕 本科CS课程学的不够,念MBA应该不错吧?当然语言一定要好。
          • I know, computer programer is so hot,and well paid. And it doesn't require high language and culture background, so it's perfect if you want to develop in north america. But ...
If you want to go back to asia, it's a different story. As I don't think programer is as popular in asia as here. And the change will be much much higher in asia than here. You know, Chinese are so smart. By the way, MBA in the states is far more popular than in Canada. If you have a famous MBA here, then it will help you to hunt a job in the states after you get your citizenship. Pls, pls think about it carefully, what's your interest. advantage and future development direction. Then make a decision. Once you make a decision, go firmly for it. Then I believe you will be successful. ^_^lum
        • My major is MIS too. I want to apply for Master of CS. Is it possible?
          • I suggest you go directly to those u's website to find out answer, or you can even e-mail them to ask your question. As they are the academic counsellors, right? lum
    • 多谢lumlum的经历。请问我有国内会计大专文凭,申请Western Ontario,U of T的MBA几率有多大?
      • It's better to ask admission officer of UWO. They are people who decide it.
        • Yes, actually u should write a letter, or e-mail them ur question. But as I know, u of w o will react ur e-mail quite promptly, but u of t, will spend much much more to reply ur e-mail. So u'd better write a letter. ^_^
    • Many thanks. One question: do you apply for graduate study? Why you didn't mention GMAT for management program? Thanks again and hope you all getting well.
    • 请问我在国内申请的MBA,学费按海外生收还是按移民收
      • depending on your status when you register.
