  • New Route: Hamilton to Iceland on PLAY - $323 to $444 CAD roundtrip

    Iceland

PLAY Airlines has announced that their first route from Canada will be from Hamilton to Reykjavik, Iceland.

You may recall the now defunct WOW Air, the low cost airline that used to operate between Toronto and Iceland. PLAY is essentially the same model.

The flights are scheduled to start on June 22nd.

Base fares currently start at $323 CAD roundtrip in late June and in September, October. July and August are approximately $150 more.

The base fare only includes a small personal item.

    Carry-on bags are $105 roundtrip.

    Checked bags are $122 roundtrip.

Seat selection is $16 to $80 roundtrip.

So yeah, watch all those fees before deciding if it's a good deal. The most direct comparison would be to Icelandair's Toronto-Reykjavik flights, which are currently priced in the $700s roundtrip with carry-on.

Air Canada's June flights from Toronto to Reykjavik start in the $850s roundtrip (except for June 4-11, which is $657 roundtrip) with carry-on.

Connecting flights to other places in Europe

You can also find flights from Hamilton to 30 different destinations in Europe, with 1 stop in Reykjavik each way.

You can find base fares in the $400s roundtrip, mainly in September or October.

But the bag fees for connecting flights are higher ($150-$170 roundtrip for carry-on, and $200-$230 roundtrip for a checked bag).

So realistically, it's around $600 roundtrip for a 1-stop flight to Europe with carry-on. Not an amazing price, but it can be $200-$400 cheaper than other airlines, depending on the destination.
