subwoofer seems to be a better option (at least to me). most modern pre-amp allows you to turn off digital signal processing (direct or pure direct mode) if you don't want to use the sub. otherwise the addition of a quality sub will make good music sound better. I normally turn off digital signal processing completely for classic music only.
